Meeting the Troops!

The staff at Regional Headquarters. They are wonderful! The Caldwells are blessed - and they are blessed to have the Caldwells!

Anne in Anita's lovely office. Looking to the left I have the view of beautiful plants and sunlight!

Bobby in deep concentration in Brad's office.

Regional Headquarters in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Officers' Fellowship at Central Corps. We had a delicious meal - including 'hatchapuri' (Georgian cheese bread as seen on the picture) - yummi!

Wonderful fellowship and food!

The Georgia Officers gathered together for a Mission Strategy Meeting. What an amazing, hard-working group of leaders! (It must be a Georgia-thing : - ) The Chief Secretary, Lt. Col. Alistair Herring and Lt. Col. Astrid Herring were there, and they were a great encouragement! It was a great day of sharing.

Our first day in the office started with coffee and cake with the staff. It was a lovely time of fellowship. Then we met with each staff member, and had a time to share and pray together. They are all very busy people, dedicated to the mission of The Salvation Army, and we feel so blessed to be working alongside each one of them over these next few months.

The learning curve is steep, and it is probably going to get steeper and steeper over the next several months - as we transition into Ukraine, as well. We are listening and learning, taking it all in, and we feel extremely privileged to have been entrusted this ministry. There is a lot going on in Georgia! The Salvation Army is doing great things here! Hats off to Majors Brad and Anita Caldwell and their great team!

Friday we were blessed to get to spend the day with all the Officers of the Georgia Region. We had a Mission Strategy Meeting, followed by fellowship. What a fantastic group of Officers! It was great to experience their passion for the mission of The Salvation Army, and to hear some of what is happening at their Corps. We look forward to visiting the Corps in the weeks to come.

The Chief Secretary, Lt. Col. Alistair Herring and Lt. Col. Astrid Herring arrived on Thursday to be with us for this weekend. What a blessing and encouragement! A full weekend with many, many blessings... look out for the next blog with pictures and narrative of the weekend - with the 15th Anniversary in Rustavi Corps, our welcome meeting at Central Corps, and some great times of fellowship in between!

First Impressions

View of Tbilisi

Tour of the old part of Tbilisi with Captains David and Anna Kotrikadze and their beautiful daughter, Lena.

A beautiful sight. You will see many crosses throughout Tbilisi.

Captain David Kotrikadze and Lena with Tbilisi in the background.

On the right - Georgian sulphur baths.

Inside one of the baths. Hard to see because of the steam.

Georgian bread bakery. A unique experience.

The most delicious bread ever - right out of the oven!

A true Georgian feast with the Kotrikadze family. What you see on the table are Georgian dumplings 'khinkali.' They are delicious! And so is every kind of food we have tasted.

When we arrived in Tbilisi late Sunday night/early Sunday morning, we were greeted in the airport by officers and friends who had come to welcome us! What a tremendous surprise and blessing to meet such wonderful people, who were willing to come out so late on a Sunday night. We felt very welcome from the very beginning!

We rested some the first day, ventured out a little bit into the neighborhood and local shops, and on Tuesday we went on a sightseeing tour of the old city with Captains David and Anna Kotrikadze and their daughter, Lena. It was a wonderful day! What a magnificent city to live in! There is so much history here, and the views are spectacular! The Georgians have much to be proud of, and as much as we are enjoying this beautiful city, we are enjoying them even more!

Captains Kotrikadze are doing a wonderful job at the Regional Headquarters of The Salvation Army, and on top of their busy lives, they are doing a great job 'looking after us.' Hopefully soon we will be much more independent.

Wednesday was our first day in the office. Look out for our next blog entry very soon!

November 6 and 7 - Destination Tbilisi

We are so blessed! We are finally on our way to Eastern Europe after a few set-backs. It is hard to believe we will be boarding a plane to Tel Aviv, Israel, in route to Tbilisi, Georgia, our home for the next few months. Our belongings are in route to Kiev, Ukraine, and in January we will be headed that way, too. We quickly realize at the end of packing our suitcases, getting ready to head to the airport in Atlanta, that we still have too much stuff. What happened to traveling light? It’s a cold day in Atlanta, so surprisingly enough our woolen coats and boots are not completely out of place. We say a tearful goodbye to our dear friends at the airport, where they send us off with a prayer of power, and deep down we are so very joyful; joyful that we were able to make such great friends in Atlanta, and joyful in anticipation of the friends we will make in places to come. The Lord has opened this door, and we are ready to step out in faith and walk through the security line at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Now, that in itself takes a lot of faith. Apparently, late night is the time to travel, and surprisingly there is no line at all.
It was in line in Tel Aviv Airport in Israel, though, that we got to meet a lot of new people, from all countries, all different agendas, and certainly different ways of doing things. We realized, right before boarding the plane in Atlanta, that our luggage had not been checked in the whole way to Tbilisi. That meant we would have to go through passport control, baggage claim, customs, and through check-in and security again in Tel Aviv. To be honest, we were dreading this slightly. Would we make our connecting flight? Again, we were reminded that we have too much stuff, and we were thankful for the free luggage carts in Tel Aviv. Passport control was crowded to say the least. Eventually lines would form and it was interesting to observe the different concepts different people have of waiting in line. We had great conversations during this time, and then everyone went in different directions enriched by each other’s company – at least that’s how we felt. We got a stamp in our passports, allowing us to stay for three months, only to get another a couple of hours later, showing that we were leaving the country again. But here we were in Israel – headed to Georgia!
Georgian Airlines next. It’s Sunday afternoon. We find the right place to check in and have our baggage checked – we think security in the US is cumbersome – it doesn’t even compare to the strict security here. What we thought might happen, happened next, as Georgian Airlines has a different luggage policy than Delta. After conversation with some sweet, sweet employees at the counter, and a couple of phone calls, however, we are on our way (without having to pay anything), and again the Lord blessed us by allowing us to encounter wonderful people.
As we are sitting on the plane, eating delicious Georgian food, we are talking about our journey so far, and the people we have met. We are all traveling from different places, going in different directions, yet our journeys coincided for a few moments. As we travel through life, and especially this journey we have just embarked on, we want to make the most out of these encounters. Lord, help us to always see them as divine opportunities! So, we are in our way, anticipating great blessings, as we open ourselves up and allow His Spirit and His creation to bless us. And our prayer is this: ‘Make us a blessing to others!’
